Expanded protections will help sharks and other sea life travel smoothly.
In the movie Finding Nemo, hundreds of sea animals ride on ocean currents—like they’re cruising busy underwater highways. Now, a newly expanded nature reserve off the coast of South America will protect real-life ocean “highways” critical for marine life. In January 2022, the president of Ecuador signed an order to expand the protected area around the Galápagos Islands. Several ocean currents rich in nutrients meet at this location. The result: Ocean life thrives in this area.
